Rich's experience with his D-1 is too common. I prefer the way instruments were sold when I started business, face-to-face, one-on-one, where the store had an interest in keeping this customer happy for a long time. It is now up to the consumer to know somehow that this service is something he or she needs and deserves. What with internet sales and big-box store sales, this is sadly no longer the case. They are still operating on the assumption that the Martin dealer is going to set up this guitar to play perfectly for whoever buys it. Their factory setup is at the high end of what's currently popular.

Martin has been around a really long time, and they are a pretty conservative company (yet, innovators at the same time). Martin's factory setup is lower than it was in the 70's, for sure, but they still have the guitar-pounder in the back of their collective mind. How many Taylor players use picks as thick as poker chips, or try to play a lead that can be heard over inconsiderate banjo players? It can certainly be done, but not with the factory setup! Bob knows exactly what his potential buyer wants, and that is how the guitars leave the factory. In our experience, the typical Taylor customer is simply not going to pound on the guitar the way many Martin players do.

I have the utmost respect for both companies. Likewise, I sold Martin guitars for as long, and I've been an authorized Martin repairman for over 20 years. I'm intimately acquainted with their repair and customer service departments. First, let me qualify myself- I was one of the first Taylor guitar dealers and I've had a great relationship with Bob and all down there for over 25 years.
